The world of Formula 1 has unveiled the new language that will be used to reference the technical complexities of its revolutionary 2026 rulebook.

The sport is introducing what is considered the most significant regulation change in its illustrious history starting in 2026, featuring fresh chassis and power unit regulations and the mandatory use of eco-friendly fuels.

The updated 1.6-litre V6 turbo hybrids, which keep the 1.6-litre V6 turbo hybrid, boast a significantly increased energy storage, driving key advancements in the cars' aerodynamics.

Over a race distance, competitors will tactically deploy electrical energy – potentially on hot laps – to achieve the peak lap time.

Broad surveys were conducted with a wide range of fans, including long-time followers and newcomers, to identify which phrases would improve understanding of the key features of the 2026 changes.

The stated goal was to render a set of intricate new areas of the sport as easy to grasp as possible for the widest audience.

Consequently, previous placeholder terms for specific components – such as "alphabetical mode names" for the adjustable aero – have been phased out in preference for descriptive names that directly explain the actual function of the technology.

What's the New Technology?

According to rule-makers that competitors will have increased agency to make decisions regarding battery management, regeneration, and saving energy.

The new regulations mandate a series of modes that will be shown on TV overlays to improve the audience's understanding of the race battle.

  • Attack Mode: This takes over from the current DRS. It provides a short boost of battery power deployable when a driver is close behind the leading car to execute an pass.
  • Power Mode: This is a on-demand battery discharge from the energy recovery system that can be deployed for attack or defence. It grants the pilot maximum power at the activation of a control.

Both of these key functions will have to be used with calculation, as the total energy is restricted.

  • Active Aerodynamics: Both the car's wings move automatically – opening on the long straight sections for low aerodynamic resistance and higher speed, and closing in the bends for maximum downforce.
  • Recharge: Cars can recharge the energy store with power recovered from braking, or during coasting at the straight's end or in certain corners where only limited engine output is used.

2026 Car Specifications

The vehicles for the new era will be reduced in size and weight relative to current models, with a distance between axles cut by 200mm to 3,400mm, overall width narrowed by 100mm – down to 1,900mm – and the minimum weight lowered by 30kg.

Overall downforce is anticipated to be reduced by approximately fifteen to thirty percent, although constructors will undoubtedly recover some as they optimize their packages.

Air resistance has been slashed by 40%. The cars will utilize moveable wing elements – front and rear wings will open on the straights to cut resistance and increase straightline speed and revert into place for peak handling.

Tyres will retain the current rim size, but the actual tyres will be reduced in width, by 25 millimetres on the front axle and three centimetres on the rear.

What's Changing in the Engines?

The 2026 engines will have an approximate 50-50 split in horsepower generated by the petrol engine and the electrical system, increasing from about one-fifth electric power this year.

The ERS setup is made less complex through the elimination of the complex turbo energy recovery device, the complicated and costly device that recovered energy from the turbo.

Every car on the grid will be obliged to compete on 100% sustainable fuel, produced using organic sources or lab-created processes.
