Addressing the Cashier Who Made Me Totally Speechless – My Hat's Off to You

It was a weekend morning, and I found myself in a foul mood, topping off my mother's vehicle. It was a common fuel stop that also functions as a convenience store, which often leads of joining a queue customers carrying goods of somewhat expensive items. It's an awful situation to unfold when all you want is to complete a simple refueling. Dreadful.

I was fourth in the queue. Just one employee working, a young woman. Something stood out to her presence. After the ditherer at the first position had completed payment for his Viakal, a baked snack, and some breakfast items, I was certain I heard the cashier tell him an excellent day. Odd. Perhaps I’d misheard, or possibly she uttered it and meant it ironically. I pondered if she might actually be a supporter in the war on delays, sharing my contempt for individuals slowing down straightforward customers including me.

Taking a step forward, becoming the third customer. The new leader of our group completed her gasoline purchase with notable efficiency. Once more it happened: “Have a wonderful day.” To be precise, it was “enjoy a truly great day”. An American? At this location? She had the accent, and hardly anyone here says to others a wonderful day, or even just a nice day. Highly unusual. Rarely does one encounter many Americans knocking around Stourbridge, and definitely not employed at gas stations or elsewhere.

I was second now. Behind a poor older woman dealing with a lengthy struggle with her basket, her food items, her purse and her rewards card. The process dragged on. When she was done, the woman also was wished an excellent day. Yes, American for sure. Confirming it was possible by saying something hilarious in her direction, to check for that reaction when they look at you, unsmilingly, and reply with genuine earnest: “That’s really funny.” However, nothing occurred of a funny comment to say.

Ultimately, I accepted the heartfelt tone – or a performance of it, essentially the same as no different – while she stared straight at me, to my very core, and told me an awesome day. My spirits lifted. It was a good thing.
