"The amount of times on tour that young girls told us and said, 'Watching you live, I bought a guitar'," remarks Alana, the youngest of the Haim siblings. "It is the biggest honor. That is recognition in itself. We've done our job if we can motivate people to start a band."

Award Recognition

The band are connecting from a break, where they're taking a pause after an lengthy tour in promoting their new album, I Quit.

They're presently processing the news it's been nominated for a top rock honor at the Grammy Awards – with Haim the pioneering all-female band ever in contention for the award.

"I tune into the lists every year, so it sort of feels like The Truman Show when your name is read out," notes Alana. "I immediately called my sisters to say, 'Did we just hear this right or am I hallucinating'?"

The significance of the accolade resonates with the trio.

"We deliberately set out to make a rock record this time, so it's a significant milestone," says Alana. "However we're just grateful for the pioneers that inspired us."

Emotional Upheaval and Humour

The project was born from a phase of transition. All three sisters found themselves single, and the music captures that unique transitional period where you're glad to be free, but not entirely ready to start anew.

The words detail breakups and farewells. The sisters want love, but not the relationships they've got. You can hear them determining in real time who they want to be.

"I adore description, yes," responds Danielle. "I Quit is kind of like a slogan. You have to consciously practice ignoring the outside opinions and saying, 'I don't give what people think'."

Refinement of Music

That newfound resilience called for a fresh approach – more raw and direct than any of the music the band had done before.

For Danielle, who worked on producing the album, that began with the drums.

"Percussion is such a nuanced thing, and I care so much about it," she states.

"'Journey of the drum sound' will be the title of our book," jokes Alana. "I've said it, our albums won't commence until we find the right drum sound."

Experiences and Shared Camaraderie

The trio's honesty shaped the album's rollout, where the sisters disclosed some of their romantic tales.

A former partner ended things with Este over a medical concern. Alana shared a story of flying to celebrate New Year's Eve with someone, only to receive a high five at midnight.

"When you're going through these setbacks, you just feel like there's no hope," says Alana. "So to be able to find humor in those stories and have them tell you wilder stories, it's therapeutic."

A Confident Path

You can clearly sense a shift in the band. Today, Haim are more confident of their place in the music world.

They're top-billed acts, with successful albums and an worldwide audience.

But the sister act will consistently be their top focus.

"We have been making music since I was four," shares Alana. "It feels as if nothing else that we were destined for. And I'm really fortunate we've made it and we're still making music."
