Mikel Arteta remains confident that his team can persist in handling with fitness issues following revealing that forward Kai Havertz will not return for several more weeks.

Extended Absence for Havertz

Havertz has been sidelined for months due to an operation on his knee. Hoped to return sooner, Arteta explained the player encountered a problem when increasing his training and was unable to move forward “the required stage.”

“We took lessons, and managed to assemble a team that is much more reliable and has increased versatility,” Arteta said.

Tactical Decisions for Midweek Fixture

This news creates a dilemma for Wednesday’s fixture at the Emirates against Brentford. Arteta must choose between persisting with Mikel Merino, who got a goal in an unfamiliar forward role on Sunday, or recalling Viktor Gyökeres, who made a return off the bench in the latter stages. Long-term absentee Gabriel Jesus remains in contention after 11 months out.

Fitness Doubts Persist

More doubts surround defender William Saliba and winger Leandro Trossard, who sat out the Stamford Bridge game. Consequently, new recruits Cristhian Mosquera and Piero Hincapié are expected to keep their places in the heart of the defence for the Premier League front-runners.

The manager is convinced the £250m spend on squad depth during the summer has resulted in a much stronger position to navigate such absences.

In response if increased squad depth was aiding their league challenge, the manager agreed. “Absolutely, as this campaign has been worse in certain positions, and now the problems with the backline,” he added.

“We learned from the past that we need to utilize players in various roles, and they need to be prepared to perform various functions if we are to fight at the highest level. And the case of Mikel is probably the prime illustration.”

Speaking about the setback noted by national team coach Julian Nagelsmann, the manager gave further detail. “He followed all protocols. He could not go to the required step and now it’s looking like we have solved that issue.”

The manager conveyed his eagerness to welcome him back. “We’re all desperate to have him. I mean, he is a footballer who, for me, I love so much for what he brings to the team, but his character, his nature. I watch him struggle on the sidelines.”

“His playing record is outstanding, he's usually fit, and I am eagerly awaiting to have him back around the team playing because I think it’s going to be a huge lift.”
