Hurricane Melissa is forecast to escalate to a uncommon Category 5 hurricane as it shifts toward the Caribbean island, bringing dangerous flash flooding and landslides.

The hurricane, which registered winds of up to 120 mph as of 0600 Greenwich Mean Time, is currently turning north-west in the Caribbean and is anticipated to hit the coast by early next week, according to weather experts.

Advisories of power cuts and structural damage have been issued as this storm generates up to thirty inches of precipitation and sea level surges as high as thirteen feet above typical tides. "Find safe refuge immediately," locals have been urged.

This hurricane is the thirteenth hurricane in this year's Atlantic season, which normally finishes in the eleventh month.

Most Intense Cyclone Risk

A highest-level storm is the most intense classification, with sustained winds of at least 252 km/h.

Even though Melissa is projected to diminish in strength to a Category 4 storm before reaching the island, meteorologists said there was "very little practical difference in the total effects" upon landfall, and that the cyclone will be "at least that intensity" when it strikes the island.

Warnings are also ongoing for areas in the neighboring country such as the capital, Port au Prince, the Dominican Republic and eastern Cuba, where Melissa is expected to bring analogous consequences by the middle portion of the coming week.

Landslides currently triggered by the hurricane have already killed two in Haiti, according to emergency services.

Future Trajectory

The hurricane is predicted to cross Cuba by Wednesday before traveling via the Antillas Mayores and emerging into the Atlantic.

By the time it arrives at Cuba, it is predicted to have diminished to a third-level storm.
