Eric Adams Plans to Back Andrew Cuomo in NYC Mayor's Election
NYC's current mayor Eric Adams has announced his intention to endorse Andrew Cuomo in the forthcoming election for mayor, even after an extended period of public tension between the pair of Democrats.
A Surprising Reversal After Previous Accusations
Just last month, Adams had strongly criticized Cuomo, labeling him a āsnake and a untruthful personā and accusing him of having āa career of marginalizing Black political contenders.ā Nonetheless, in a new development, Adams reversed course, stating he now intends to campaign alongside Cuomo in neighborhoods where he holds strong support.
āI think that it is imperative to really wake up the communities of color that have been affected by urban displacement on how critical this election is,ā Adams stated.
He added, āResidents have seen their rents increase in terms of gentrification and they have been ignored in those neighborhoods, and Iām going to go to those neighborhoods and talk directly with organizers and groups and Iām going to walk with the former governor in those areas and get them involved.ā
Election Landscape and Current Developments
The mayoral contest has so far been dominated by the contest between Cuomo and progressive candidate Zohran Mamdani, whose rise in the polls has made headlines internationally and represented aspirations for a revitalized progressive wing of the Democratic party.
During a latest mayoral debate, both Mamdani and GOP candidate Curtis Sliwa announced they would reject the mayor's support if extended.
Months ago, Adams had launched his re-election campaign as an independent after being indicted on legal accusations which were later thrown out in exchange for Adamsās cooperation with federal immigration raids across the city.
At an separate media briefing on Thursday, Adams responded to reporters inquiring into the endorsement plan by saying, āIāll be with Andrew this evening.ā
This development followed a day after Adams and Cuomo were seen sitting courtside together at the New York Knicksā first game at the famous arena, which took place immediately following a heated mayoral debate.
