According to a former senior officer from the UK's largest police force, police departments are increasingly pressured to publicly share the racial identities of suspects in response to a surge in far-right speculation on online networks.

Recent Incident: Knife Attack on Train in Cambridgeshire

Early Sunday, British Transport Police reported the detainment of two individuals following a multiple knife attacks on a railway carriage in Cambridgeshire. An individual, a British citizen of black heritage aged 32, and a second, a 35-year-old of Caribbean descent, were initially held. Later, the older suspect was freed with no further action, and police confirmed he was not involved in the attack.

New Guidance to Fight False Claims

In August, new guidelines were rolled out to address the dissemination of false narratives on digital platforms, which had escalated after the deadly attack of three schoolgirls in Southport previously.

Yet, campaigners warned that this move could lead to an excessive focus on the ethnicity of those accused and spark further rightwing conspiracy theories when information are withheld with the general population.

Expert Opinion

Dal Babu, who worked in the UK's largest police force, described the need for police to reveal the ethnicity of individuals in incidents involving ethnic minorities as an "unforeseen outcome".

“When the new guidance was issued, I warned that there was a danger that there will be an expectation for police to release information on every single occasion,” he said.

He expressed sympathy for his ex-peers in the force, explaining that they are “in a no-win situation”. “They are under pressure because there is such intense speculation from the far right on social media after every major incident about the background of suspects.”

Response from Officials

Ben Obese-Jecty, whose constituency includes Huntingdon, described it “unfortunate” but necessary for police to quickly disclose the ethnicities of those detained.

“I don’t like it. I understand why they do it. I think they actually have to do it now,” he commented, stating that social media are leveraged to push agendas, making it critical for police to provide accurate information to address rumors.

Far-Right Exploitation

Prior to the police announcement, conservative figures had called for a faster response. For instance, Chris Philp urged for timely release of suspect information, while Nigel Farage posted on the platform formerly known as Twitter that the public should be informed “as soon as possible”.

Moreover, far-right social media accounts sought to manipulate the event. One account named “British Patriot”—with nearly 5,000 followers—circulated an unsubstantiated claim that a knife-wielding man had been shouting “Allahu Akbar”.

Ongoing Suspicion

Despite police confirmed that the suspects were UK citizens, some figures continued to suggest that details was being withheld. Ben Habib claimed it was “almost inconceivable” that the incident was not an act of terrorism, contrary to police assurances indicating otherwise.

Guidance Background

The guidance were developed by the National Police Chiefs’ Council (NPCC) in acknowledgment of “growing public anxiety” and to ensure law enforcement procedures were “fit for purpose in an age of rapid information spread”.

This move came soon after a political party alleged that officials of hiding the identities and immigration status of individuals charged in a different incident in a UK county.

Previous Instances

In May, when a car ploughed into crowds marking Liverpool FC’s winning, local authorities disclosed that the suspect was white and British to quash rumors of a terrorist attack by an Asian man.

The NPCC emphasized that choices on releasing such information would be made by individual police forces, taking into account broader moral and legal factors. Confirming a suspect’s immigration status would be handled by the UK interior ministry, not police.
