New York Jets Coach Aaron Glenn Confident Kris Boyd Will Make a Full Recovery After New York City Incident

Jets head coach Aaron Glenn revealed that he recently spoke with cornerback Kris Boyd and is confident the player will recover well after being shot in central New York in the early hours of Sunday.

Glenn shared that Boyd, who is hospitalized, was “in good spirits” during a recent discussion.

“What reassures me, is that he’s in good spirits,” Glenn stated on Wednesday. “His wife and child, they are doing well and he is expected to recover fully.”

It remained unclear when Boyd could be discharged the hospital, where he has been listed as in critical but steady condition.

“Not certain at the moment,” Glenn remarked. “But I will say this, just talking to him, he seemed very positive. Once more, that puts my mind at ease, given his positive frame of mind and he expresses himself so positively.”

Authorities released security footage Monday of a suspect in the attack on the player. The reason behind the incident remains under investigation and authorities said it’s not clear if Boyd was singled out. No other injuries were reported.

The shooting happened in the early morning on Sunday in the area between Madison Square Garden and the iconic square. Boyd, in his late twenties, was admitted to a local hospital after sustaining an abdominal gunshot wound, according to authorities. The perpetrator got away.

Glenn shared Boyd has been on his mind “a ton” since the news broke. Glenn added that Boyd and his wife recently welcomed a newborn.

“What immediately crossed my mind, he has a new baby,” Glenn remarked. “I thought of his spouse, I’m thinking about his kid and I want to make sure that he’s OK. And that’s the only thing that really went through my mind.
“There is a procedure involved, that I won’t detail, but It is reassuring that he will recover excellently.”

Boyd did not participate during the current season, after joining the team, after his season was cut short due to injury on mid-August with a shoulder injury that required surgery.

Boyd came to New York as a free agent in spring and was expected to be a key part of an improved special teams group under Glenn and special teams coordinator the special teams coach. But Boyd was injured during a practice session on 2 August and was taken away on a cart.

Boyd has stayed involved with the squad all season long while recovering from the shoulder injury.

“He remains involved with our activities,” Glenn stated. “Certainly, he comes to the games all the time. His commitment is total. As one of the league’s best on special teams, he’s done a really good job of helping the other guys we have.”

Boyd, hailing from the Lone Star State, played his first four seasons with Minnesota after getting drafted in the seventh round by the Vikings out of the University of Texas in 2019. He joined the Arizona Cardinals in 2023 and moved to Houston’s squad subsequently. Boyd agreed to a one-year deal valued at $1.6 million with New York in the spring.
